In a recent program with my dear friend, Sukhvinder, on what it means to awaken and balance the inner man and woman- she showed us a beautiful short film in which Robert Bly and Michael Meade take a group of men into what does it mean to be a man.
And how the warriors in the past would need to learn poetry and dance before they were taught the art of war. So that the warrior was sensitive and not brutal.
I reflected how all martial arts are not about brutality.. but about peace and self defense..
Michael shares a lovely story- I think an old African tale- “Killing the lizard” and how he shares it is also awesome..
it reveals how most of us men don’t seem to really be grow up beyond our boyhood.. and what does it take to truly “grow up”… and how different it is from being ‘macho’.
It would be well worth your while to see it.. Links below.. you will need to see 3 videos of 8-10min. Once you see one.. you will want to see the next.. all connected.. broken up into smaller bytes. Enjoy.
It begins with
An Old Conversation .. (check the video by clicking on the link underlined!)
And then moves on to the exploration of
The Warrior (see the awesome story of “killing the lizard” by clicking the link !)
And finally reveals what is involved when we take on this journey of being a man.
On being a man (can click this one also! to complete the story!)
Its interesting I am also reading the book that my dear friend Rhea recommended
The Journey to Ixtlan by Carlos Castaneda and I am at the point at which Don Juan is revealing to Carlos what it means to be a warrior.
Amazing how life configures itself to offer what is most needed for our awakening to the truth of who we are.
Thanks Sukhi, Rhea, Carlos, Robert, Michael and all that is. The one dance lives.
This is a beautiful post Kiran. I have always been of the opinion that why we need Womens lib and such organisation tells us that first we need a Mans lib which actually informs him of who he truly is and then there will be no need to liberate women. Its like aligning the back wheel so that the front wheel functions better and vice-versa. Cheers!
Dipalle,
I would say that we need to go beyond the polarity of a man’s lib or a woman’s lib and look at lib per se..
True Liberation from any concepts of this or that is what is required and when we come home and see that its all a dream then we can attend to truly beautifying the dream, is it not?
Dola’s status on fb and Bharath’s request made me convert this to a blog post:
In the ancient tribes, a warrior was first taught to appreciate nature, beauty, love making, music and dance. Then he was sent out to war. Thank you Kiran for that lovely video on circle of men.
Raj Mali commented on this:
“Thanks for the link Kiran reaffirms my belief in the ways of the old ones who came before religions. A real warrior is a man with golden heart n whose eyes can “see” beauty a good hunter of all things sacred n an avid dreamer who is unafraid to dream a new world into being for his own clan n fellow walkers those who walked with quiet power r slowly waking up again all over the place, videos like this r a good sign of the old n relevant slowly surfacing in collective consciousness. More power to the Heart Warriors in times to come”
Kiran ! I am yet to see the link. My first cut reaction or response is why do we have to bother about these apparent appendages like , Man , Warrior etc. When just simply ” Being ” encompasses all and helps one do what ought to be done at any point . Would love to have your clarity ! Regs
Well, Prakash.. just because some of us enjoy the game and we are here to play it well.
The being wanted to experience itself as the warrior, as the lover, as the dreamer, as the villian and the vanquished.. thats why the dream of separation was born.
Have you seen the blog on the lover and the beloved.. where I quote Meher Baba.
The all encompassing and the particular colors and flavors of being..
Like Kabir says .. Hadd anhad ke beech mein.. the dance is on the verge of the human and the divine, the limited and the unlimited. Is it not?
